Let’s break the rules

Did you know? The rules don’t apply to you.

About 8 years ago, my very first life coach helped me find the version of freedom that I needed by walking me through this concept. When she told me that the rules didn’t apply to me I said “Isn’t that what psychos believe about themselves?” She said, “Well, are you a psycho?” I am not. I had been unwilling to change aspects of my life that were making me feel horrible because I thought I had to continue down the path I had started 15 year prior.

The rules don't apply to any of us. None of them. When we break them we have to accept the consequences, which is what makes us NOT psychos... Accountability.

We have been indoctrinated into our cultures so deeply that our beliefs feel like an obvious truth, but many cultures have no concept for what we might believe is a Solid-Written-In-Stone-Fact. Many of the things that we believe are holding us back, but we continue to abide by those rules because of family, tradition, society, etc.

Walking away from our cultural beliefs is challenging. Your brain doesn’t want to derail from its familiar neural pathways. It prefers the comfort of routine. When I finally decided to make big changes I would wake up in the middle of the night in Fight/Flight/Freeze mode. The amount of fear that I had was inappropriate for the situation, but it felt so real. Real, but not true. I wasn’t going to “ruin my life” by making these changes. But that’s what my 3AM brain thought!

If your life isn’t going the way you want it to, you can break the rules. You can unlearn the systems that no longer suit you. You can do whatever you want.
